The Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) laser is a laser which combines two forms of energy: light and radiofrequency.  This system achieves skin rejuvenation and renewal by selectively heating the deeper tissues while cooling the skin’s surface.  It is designed to be a “lunchtime” procedure with minimal redness, swelling and recovery time.

    “age” spots and freckles

  •  Optional: removes hair

What should you do to prepare for a laser treatment?

If using a collagen enhancing product such as Retin-A or glycolic acid, you should stop using the product for approximately one week before and after treatment.  Occasionally, these products can irritate or make the treated areas red and/or irritated.

What should you expect after the procedure?

Immediately following the procedure you may notice some mild discomfort and redness of the treated areas.  If a topical anesthetic was used, the treated area will be numb for 1 to 4 hours.

You may notice some skin color changes including a temporary darkening of the existing freckles, sun spots, or blotches.  This is to be expected.  The darkened spots usually flake off in a few days and should not be rubbed or peeled off. Blisters could occur but is extremely rare - you should contact our office if you experience this symptom.  All these changes are normal and the recovery depends on the individual and the treatment strength performed.

What may be abnormal?

AFTER

Before and after four laser treatments

If you experience excessive redness, discomfort, itchiness, new pimples or a rash please contact our office. We may prescribe certain medications that can help.

What do I do after treatment?

BEFORE

AFTER

Before and after three laser treatments.

Important: Apply hydrocortisone 0.5% twice a day for up to two days to treated areas as needed. We provide you with an application immediately following treatment and we have small tubes for purchase in our office. It is also available at any drug store.

Hydrocortisone 0.5% reduces inflammation and calms the treated areas. Some patients find one application immediately following treatment is enough; others may need to apply twice per day for up to two days.

  • Wear minimal makeup and moisturize your skin generously for several days.

  • Do not use Retin A, Kinerase, Metrogel or exfoliating products for one week.

  • You can return to work the same day and resume all regular activities. Be gentle to your skin.  Imagine your face to be a newly seeded lawn.

  • Avoid direct sunlight and wear sunscreen or sunblock to preserve your skin.

How many treatments do I need?

Optimal results usually require 3 to 5 sessions no closer than 4 weeks apart.  Most patients are extremely happy with the results and find their skin to be tighter, smoother and more uniform in color.  The result is younger looking skin!
